Shania Twain – "She's Not Just a Pretty Face" (2003)

She’s not just a pretty face
She’s got everything it takes

It’s a scientific fact that Canadian-born country superstar Shania Twain – who is the best-selling female artist in country music history – is a pretty face.  According to a 2009 study published in the journal Vision Research,  she has a perfect face in terms of its geometry.

How perfect is your face?
Elizabeth Hurley’s face is almost but not quite as perfect, while Angelina Jolie isn’t even close.

Shania Twain – who was born Eilleen Regina Edwards in Windsor, Ontario, in 1965 – had a very difficult childhood.

Her parents divorced when she was just two.  Her mother remarried Jerry Twain, an Ojibwe Indian who adopted her and her two sisters.  (There have been erroneous media reports that Twain herself is of Ojibwe descent, but she apparently has about as much Native American blood as Elizabeth Warren.)

The perfect face?
Twain’s parents were broke most of the time when she was young, and she witnessed a number of instances of domestic violence involving her mother and stepfather.

To help put food on the table, she started singing at local bars when she was only eight years old.  “I hated going into bars and being with drunks,” she has said.  “But I loved the music and so I survived.”

Twain started singing in local cover bands when she was in high school.  She paid for voice lessons by cleaning the house of her singing coach.

Her mother and stepfather died in a car accident when she was 22, and she moved back into the family home to take care of her younger siblings.

After signing a contract with a country record label several years later, she changed her name from Eilleen Twain to Shania Twain.  (There have been published reports that “Shania” is an Ojibwe word meaning “on my way,” but her biographer has written that there is no truth to that story.)

Shania’s first album sold only moderately well, and she was frustrated that it included only one of her original songs.  But rock producer “Mutt” Lange – who had produced albums by AC/DC, Foreigner, Def Leppard, the Cars, Bryan Adams, and many others – thought enough of it to contact her and offer to collaborate with her.

Twain and Lange
Every track on her second album – The Woman in Me – was an original Twain-Lange composition.  No fewer than four singles from that album were #1 hits on the U.S. country charts.

Lange and Twain were married in 1993, only a few months after they met.  The couple eventually moved to Corseaux, Switzerland, where their son Eja was born in 2001.

Lange was a vegetarian and a devotee of Sant Mat, an Eastern philosophy that had elements of Sikhism, Hinduism, and Sufism.  Twain followed his lead after their wedding.

But eschewing meat and sharing the same spiritual beliefs wasn’t enough to keep the couple together.  In 2008, the two separated after Lange allegedly had a dalliance with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, who was Twain’s best friend.

Shortly after the Lange-Twain divorce became final, Twain turned around and married Marie-Anne’s ex-husband, Nestlé executive Frédéric Thiébaud.

From E! News:

After a shocking betrayal by her best friend and her husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange, Shania Twain has found new love and a new lease on life thanks to her second marriage. But that doesn’t mean she has totally let go of what happened in the past. . . .

When asked what she would say to Marie-Anne Thiébaud, her former best friend who allegedly had an affair with Lange, she [answered] “I wish I'd never met you.”

“She’s Not Just a Pretty Face” was the fourth single from Twain’s fourth studio album, Up!  It peaked at #9 on the Billboard “Hot Country Singles” chart in 2003 – which made it her 15th top ten hit.
